Ducks, which begin arriving in late fall and populate creeks and ponds throughout the Japanese islands through the cold winter, have long been a favorite subject of Japanese poets and painters.

This exceptionally fine silk brocade was probably woven in Peking for the Tibetan market. Some thankas were made from woodblock prints, painted and brought to Peking where Chinese weavers made copies on their looms.

A work made of silk, and silver-leaf-over-lacquered-paper, twill weave with supplementary patterning wefts bound by secondary binding warps in twill interlacings.
